609,939 New USDOT Numbers Since 2018
An objective analysis of address, name, and email trends in carrier registrations.
Since 2018, 609,939 new USDOT numbers have been registered with the U.S. Department of Transportation.
The dataset analyzed excludes bus and car service companies and includes only entities marked as “Authorized For Hire.” In other words, these are trucking companies authorized to haul freight commercially.
The registration data contains basic company information, including the physical address, the name of the company officer, and the company's email address. While seemingly routine, a closer examination reveals statistical patterns that stand out, particularly when compared to U.S. Census data and common business practices.
This article does not offer conclusions or accusations. It presents the data as-is: highlighting the most frequent last names, the widespread use of non-professional email domains, and instances of reused contact information across multiple companies.
In a sector where safety, trust, and accountability are critical, these patterns warrant attention.

Interesting Google Maps Finds
Out of curiosity (or morbid fascination), I started entering addresses from the USDOT registration database into Google Maps. These weren’t cherry-picked. Just random entries with more than 15 power units ‘registered.’
The FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) requires motor carriers to provide a physical address where the business maintains its safety records, and this address cannot be a P.O. Box, private mailbox, or similar location with no legal or functional relationship to the business. This address is crucial for on-site safety audits and compliance reviews.
55,000 power units.
150 power units. Maybe they got the permit approved…
8,900 power units.
52 power units. There’s an apartment complex on the other side, but it doesn't match the address.
41,500 power units.
55 power units.
39 power units.
11,000 power units. Yes, the pole is concerning.
16 power units.
All data presented in this article is sourced from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) registration records. Applicants manually enter these records and are not subject to robust standardization or normalization. As a result:
Addresses, names, and other fields may appear in multiple formats.
Typos, formatting inconsistencies, and intentional obfuscations are common.
Variations in street names (e.g., “St” vs. “Street” or inclusion of unit numbers) may cause duplication or fragmentation in counts.
The data may not reflect real-world physical presence, especially in cases involving virtual offices or third-party registration services.
We’ve taken steps to clean and normalize the data where possible, but users should interpret findings with an understanding of these systemic limitations.
